Washington Center Newsletter | An Interview: Beginning from the Beginning | Alexander Technique Workshops | Location | Director The Alexander Technique Center of Washington The Alexander Technique Center of Washington is dedicated to providing the highest quality of instruction in the Alexander Technique. The Center offers private lessons, gives introductory workshop and presentations to groups, and offers a comprehensive teacher-training program that meets the three-year daily training requirements established by F. Matthias Alexander, the creator of the Alexander Technique. The Center also publishes an online newsletter, maintains an extensive informational web site, Alexander Technique: The Insiders’ Guide, and is the publisher of the book, Beginning from the Beginning: The Growth of Understanding and Skill. A Conversation with Joan and Alexander Murray. The Alexander Technique is learned on an individual basis through taking in-person private lessons. Alexander Technique Teacher Training The Washington Center offers a comprehensive teacher-training program that meets the three-year, daily training standards established by F. Matthias Alexander, the creator of the Alexander Technique. The training course has been approved since 1994 by the American Society for the Alexander Technique. The Alexander Technique Center is currently accepting applications for the Winter 2025 trimester. Alexander Technique: The Insiders’ Guide The Center maintains an extensive informational website: Alexander Technique: The Insiders’ Guide. The Insiders' Guide site includes introductory and specialty articles, information on taking lessons and teacher training, book reviews, and special sections, including: "Ergonomics and the Alexander Technique," the "Alexander Technique for Musicians" site—which has been recognized and recommended by MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Online Teaching), and the "John Dewey and the Alexander Technique" website. Beginning from the Beginning: The Growth of Understanding and Skill Beginning from the Beginning is a fascinating interview with Alexander Technique Master Teachers Joan and Alexander Murray and includes many photographs. The book describes the Murrays’ collaboration with Alexander Technique student, anatomist, and world-renowned anthropologist Raymond Dart on the use of developmental movement to gain an enhanced understanding of the Technique. Alexander Technique Workshops and Presentations The Center’s Director, Marian Goldberg, gives introductory workshops, courses, and presentations to groups by request. Location The Alexander Technique Center is located in McLean (Fairfax County) Virginia, within ten minutes drive of Tysons Corner, the City of Falls Church, and Arlington in Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. (Chain Bridge), and the Maryland suburbs (American Legion Bridge/495); 15 to 20 minutes from Key Bridge (Washington, DC), Potomac and Bethesda in Maryland, and Great Falls, Vienna, Oakton, Annandale, and Reston in Northern Virginia; and 20 to 30 minutes from Rockville and Chevy Chase in Maryland, and Springfield, Herndon, Burke, and the cities of Fairfax and Alexandria in Virginia. Marian Goldberg Marian Goldberg maintains a private Alexander Technique teaching practice in the Washington, D.C. area and is the Director of the Alexander Technique Center's Teacher-Training Program. Marian began studying the Alexander Technique in 1978. After working with a variety of interpretations of the Technique from 1978 to 1980, she went on to study with Joan and Alexander Murray at the Urbana Center for the Alexander Technique in 1980. Marian graduated from the Urbana Center’s intensive teacher-training program in 1983, fulfilling the three-year daily training standards established by F. Matthias Alexander, the creator of the Alexander Technique. In addition, Marian completed two years of advanced training at the Urbana Center. She has been teaching the Technique since 1983 and is certified by both the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT), UK, and the American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT). Marian has also studied with teachers directly trained by F. Matthias Alexander: Walter Carrington, Peggy Williams, and Marjorie Barstow. She has taught classes and workshops in the Technique for colleges and universities and for a number of organizations, including the United States Marine Band, the Vocal Studies Program at George Mason University, and the University of Illinois. Her articles have appeared in several publications, including The Alternative Health Sourcebook and Natural Awakenings magazine. Marian has developed several web sites: "Alexander Technique: The Insiders’ Guide," "John Dewey and the Alexander Technique" and "The Alexander Technique for Musicians." She is the editor of Beginning from the Beginning: A Conversation with Joan and Alexander Murray.
